"Urban Stages" - A narrative for the Athenian urban-scape
6+1* proposals for rethinking downtown Athens.
This project proposes a new approach by considering pockets of public space in downtown Athens as independent but interwoven elements of a broader urban fabric. The concept aims to develop a narrative regarding the individual public spaces while retaining the unique qualities of each one.
"The public space is perceived as a theatrical palco."
The way that people experience public space resembles the way that viewers react to a theatrical play. Each square resembles an urban stage, a contextual narrative emerging from the unique character of each neighborhood. Urban Stages are part of a larger context- a play, where urban design and scenography merge to provoke emotion and instill images to the collective memory of each place in the form of screenwriting. The feeling provoked by a play is transferred through the mediums of architecture and urban design to the people that interact with the space.
A unique opportunity- regarding the transformation of downtown Athens- emerges, when the public space is perceived as a system of dynamic relationships between its vital parts, the community that lives in it, the government that regulates it and the architects that shape it.
